LES Hotel Saturation: A Map

It's no secret that the influx of hotels on the Lower East Side (predominantly in "Hell Square") is destroying the unique character allegedly being championed and sold to tourists. Before long, there will probably be a hotel on every corner, and little history left for consumption. Clearly, mega-developers and their money-driven egos care nothing about eliminating a diverse community or the resultant neighborhood displacement.

With these notions in mind, I constructed a map, albeit incomplete, which captures the staggering number of hotels in the area. Note that Orchard Street is the hardest hit in this ongoing gold rush, shouldering what will be four total boutique spots. The unfinished "Hell Building" no longer counts, though.

a mind numbing if important post. What I wanna know is when is the photographer who owns the massive bank (I forget his name) on Bowery gonna cave and sell...you know it's coming.

Wow.

Well done, BB.

Was there even one hotel in this area ten years ago? That developers have gone batshit crazy isn't news, but this is absolutely unbelievable. I'm in shock.

Unbelievable. I bet there's lots of constructiongraffiti in those buildings.

Ken, I think the guy's name is Jay Maisel. I'm sure he will sell, but probably not during this crisis.

Dont worry this economic collapse will precipitate all these annoying kids to flee back home to Mommy and Daddy as the crime wave accelerates and city services deteriorate. That will take care of the redeveopment/Htel wave issue. The rest of us can return to life-as-normal.

To Working-Class Roots,

Aren't you bitter? Are you actually excited about increases in crime? I only live in dangerous neighborhoods because it's real, yea.
