Yesterday afternoon, the shelves at Ludlow newcomer Stella Filante were still empty. Inside, the smell of wood and lacquer was pungent, with workers toiling to put the finishing touches on what will be a high-end women’s boutique. According to the owner, the store is tentatively scheduled to open tomorrow, and will feature garments by many upstart designers. Oh, joy.

My curiosity got the best of me last week and I finally ventured in. I found the perfect bridesmaid dress but didn't want to buy it without the bride's approval, took a picture of it and then after getting the go ahead I called the store thinking I could just put it on hold for me for the next week until I found the time to get down there. They did me one better, and personally delivered it to me that day! It's worth checking out.

The sales people were so friendly when I went in there, I even spoke with the owner herself! They have so many great pieces, and they're all so different than most of the stuff you find in the area. They seem to have a price for just about everyone too, especially in their sale section. I got the most adorable blue jumper, and I know I wont have to worry about having an awkward run-in with someone wearing the same outfit. I'm telling all my friends about this place, whatever problems they had in the beginning have definitly been worked out.

Had a very interesting experience at this store. While lovely inside, they don't appear to concerned about complying with state tax laws. I was charged 8.75% tax on one item that shouldn't even have been charged and the same on another item that should have been charged at the 4.375% rate. When I brought this to their attention they responded by telling me that their "accountants wanted it this way." Considering that way is technically illegal, I'm not entirely sure that was the case. After two phone calls thus far, I'm starting to get the idea that they don't much care about tax laws (not so great for a retail business), nor do they appear to care about my repeat business or their reputation. I know it's only $14, but it's the principal of the matter. I'm being nice about it and I only spent a few hundred dollars there. I'm trying to give them a heads-up so that the gal who drops a few thousand doesn't go through the roof on them. The last phone call was another brush off, though I was told they would call me back tomorrow with more news. I'm not holding my breath. Though they probably should be.
