10:09 PM: The smell of smoke in the Lower East Side is overbearing right now, thanks to a blaze in the Two Bridges neighborhood. What seems like the entire downtown firefighter force is gathered near the Hong Kong Supermarket at the corner of Pike and East Broadway. Smoke is billowing from the structures; hundreds of onlookers watching on the sidelines. EXCLUSIVE UPDATES, PICTURES, AND VIDEO BELOW!!

UPDATE 10:09 PM: Video and Pictures
UPDATE 10:40 PM: Thanks to all the readers for submitting their stories!
UPDATE 11:16 PM: Fire is still smoldering. Looks like it's isolated in the building adjacent to the Hong Kong Supermarket
Update 12:16 AM:
Tower Ladder 9 is still spraying the supermarket and nearby buildings. Other fire trucks are starting to pack up the hoses. An unnamed FDNY officer says that "the whole supermarket burned down" and that "we will be here all night." We thanked him for all his hard work and service to the city.

I'm in the East Village and it smelled like it was right down on the street. Swarms of fire trucks showed up but quickly left, probably due to false 911 calls.

Everyone else in our building is gone for the weekend...a strange confluence of circumstances...and we were worried there was an electrical fire in one of the other apts.

Yes, BOWERY BOOGIE SAVED OUR EVENING! Now we know it was just smoke from downtown creeping through our big, beautiful, incredibly old and loose-fitting windows.

I hope nobody was hurt. Sounds like a big fire.

It's been over an hour and not a single word about it on any of the NY news sites - unreal. This is the only site to mention it. Everyone in our building thought it was in an apartment, too.

Excellent work Boogie! Smelled it all the way to 9th street, thought it was an electrical fire as well until my brother called me from the LES and asked if I smelled the smoke as well.

Many thanks to you sir!

Seriously, great job catching what no major news channel seemed to notice. Not that you need more pics, but here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/24812580@N08/sets/72157618083364371/

Hong Kong supermarket is gone. What a shame. I saw guys getting pulled off the roof and apparently there were no injuries.

Thanks for this - I smelled smoke all the way up on 5th St and it was so thick, I thought it must be something catastrophic. Nothing on the news, of course...!
