Régate is Dead

198 Orchard

After a menial two years on the upper reaches of Orchard Street, the Régate bistro at #198 is dead. Circumstances are unclear – no “for rent” signs, DOB violations, or other citations were visible. Just a shuttered gate and an out-of-place seasonal vestibule.

In search of more clues, the mystery eventually led us to their official website. Alas, no information there either. Just a blank white parking page with the ominous message, “Domain regate-bistro.com no longer valid.” Calls to the listed phone number netted the dreaded three-toned operator message; but with a twist. Apparently the number was temporarily disconnected.

Guess the fine folks at Curbed were accurate in predicting that the use of Comic Sans as awning font would be a deathwatch indicator.

UPDATE: A reader informs us that the business is currently up for sale.

Good point, Grieve. I liked this place also, especially brunch. but the place was usually empty.

That reminds me of a Seinfeld episode. I hope you didn't suggest any changes to the menu or decor!

Well, this doesn't surprise me. I never saw anyone in there. I really liked this place, though. Mrs. G and I ate here several times... We were the only people inside each time. The owners were friendly, and seemed delighted at how much we liked the food, etc.
