Demolition Moving Forward at 178 Bleecker

In February of 2008, Jeremiah broke news that Magic Shoes in the ground level of 178 Bleecker Street was shuttering forever. But that was only the beginning of the saga. Toward the end of the year, The Villager reported that this century-old piece of architecture would inevitably meet the wrecking ball; it didn’t matter that the property is on the border of the MacDougal-Sullivan Gardens landmark designation.
Fast forward to present – a few months after being caged and shrouded in a veil of evil netting, demolition of the five-story row house seems to be moving forward. Indeed, yesterday afternoon we stopped in for a quick slice at the adjacent Pizza Box, and noticed the top floor of the building was dismantled.
