Evening News Covers Calvin Klein Billboard
The risque billboard advertising along Houston has been a topic of discussion on the neighborhood blog scene for some time. In particular, the one hanging above Win Restaurant Supplies, Inc. at the corner of Lafayette. Racked reported on the "ass-in-your-face" Calvin Klein ad in early February, claiming it was much less racy than the usual fare; a few months later, we added our two cents to the conversation regarding the steamy orgy scene that has since been in place.
Then yesterday, the Daily News reignited the debate by questioning whether the three-dudes-and-one-girl fantasy is too offensive. By late afternoon, the television news networks (My9, NBC, and Fox 5) had already mobilized to further capture "their story." One nearby cameraman nodded when we asked if this was indeed the story. A coincidence? Definitely not. It's just another instance of local blog coverage being wantonly pilfered for the mainstream media.
Either way, the biggest winner here is Calvin Klein.

The ad has been up there for five weeks!
Why now? Poor sales? CK's people made a call to the Daily News to drum up some controversy...?
Could be a CK inside job. Especially in light of the fact that it's been up there for so long.
Has to be some maneuvering, although I am often amazed what passes for news.
Kids these days are not prudish. I am sure they like this style of advertising and think it's cool. I love Calvin Klein--classic and gorgeous especially when on sale.
