The Gas is Gone

Mobil Move
Mobil Stripped Bare

Yesterday afternoon, both EV Grieve and Curbed noted the boarded-up Mobil Station at the crazy intersection of Pike Street and East Broadway. This morning the scene was very somber, thanks in part to the driving rain. Pumps are stripped bare and all relevant pricing and company signage is gone. With the loss of this local gas station, there really aren't many nearby alternatives to refill the tank. The closest pumps are now the BP on Houston, the Exxon Gulf on Second Avenue, or the Mobil on Avenue C.

Downtown Mobile

With the almost sudden availability of fresh real estate in the aftermath of the Hong Kong Supermarket fire, including this strategic corner lot, gaudy development in this part of the neighborhood now seems likely.

The timing seems curious...Suddenly two prime corner spots are available to developers.

Very, very curious. Not one but TWO unidentical things happening. Dick Cheney is surely responsible. Or yunnies, somehow.

That station was there...what...25 years?
