After nigh on a year at 94 Orchard Street, the aptly named women’s boutique, Shop, is finished. Despite the deep spring clearance sales all weekend, the store abruptly shuttered after business hours on Sunday night. There were no outward signs or warnings of its impending doom. Needless to say, it was a somber scene, with three employees moving out the furniture and packing up the remaining garments.
However, it appears the company will continue to maintain an online presence.
Friday Opening: Shop. Orchard [Bowery Boogie]
Iconic vinyl art has taken a turn for the outlandish with Israeli comedy singer Roy Kafri’s latest music video. He not only features classic album covers brought to life, but ones that are, in fact, beatboxing on the street. Bowie beatboxing. Lou Reed beatboxing. If that’s not enough to mess with your mind, it’s filmed in reverse; by the end, we […]
Unfortunately for Marilyn Louie, when it rains, it poors. Literally. This time the weather proved itself an enemy, with downpours sidelining the business. Damn. The embattled newsstand owner – on the Bowery for thirty-eight years – seriously can’t catch a break. Heavy rainfall last week and its resultant flooding reportedly forced [Chinese language] the longtime newsstand […]
Street artist Hanksy is tapping right into global fear of an Ebola outbreak. His latest piece is self-proclaimed, “straight outta Congo.” The sticker sized placement is in eastern Chinatown and features the one and only Eazy-E Bola and his virus strain neck. Meanwhile, Hanksy continues to explore street art around the country with his new “Surplus […]
Haute lifestyle boutique Condor is no longer part of the gold-coast landscape of Little Italy. The business closed its three-year-old shop at 259 Elizabeth Street at the end of August, but has been running a pop-up locale down on Kenmare Street in the interim. Now it’s again without a home. Condor flew the coop thanks […]
That fake bar for pregnant women isn’t the only controversial PR stunt Bartrendr has up its collective sleeve. The bar-finding mobile app is at it again with another faux-pax advert on Spring Street. The commercial unit at 59 Spring is currently masquerading as Black Box, “NYC’s only bar for on duty pilots.” Don’t be fooled, […]
The revitalization and beautification of Pier 42 into public parkland is slowly advancing through the bureaucracy. Indeed, Community Board 3 last night heard and approved the final design for Phase 1 of the so-called master plan. Suits from both Matthews Nielsen Landscape Architects and the Parks Department presented to the Parks and Rec subcommittee in order […]
Three Hell Square bars – two of which are newcomers – are headed straight to the State Liquor Authority for blessings regarding OP upgrades and alterations. Each of the establishments received denials from Community Board 3 within the last few months. Below is a quick and dirty update. The Derby Controversial owner (and hated neighbor) […]
The Bowery Mission is set to receive some much needed government dollars to help stock their rapidly depleting pantry for local Lower East Side homeless. The Food Pantries Initiative has $237,600 earmarked in the city’s 2015 Fiscal Year budget, spread between ten delegates, which leaves Councilwoman Margaret Chin with $23,760 to work with. Of that, she plans to allocate $9,000 to the […]
This Saturday (October 25), Billy LeRoy is reviving his antiques business for one day only. He’ll head down to Seward Park to pitch the big-top tent as part of the Hester Street Fair’s “Bedford + Bowery Bazaar,” the last event of the season. Billy Leroy’s eponymous antiques business on East Houston was a fixture of […]
While not readily apparent, the old Laugh Lounge space at 151 Essex Street is almost completely transformed. Behind those bombed-out windows the tables are set, with Tijuana Picnic nearly ready to begin service. Word on the street is that the Mexican/Asian fusion establishment – under construction since May 2013 – opens next week. Tijuana Picnic […]
