2 Allen Shrouded Netting Up Close

Behind a veil of dark netting, demolition of the four-story commercial loft at 2 Allen Street (aka 1-3 Orchard) is now officially underway.  Brick by brick.  Once eliminated from its desirable corner lot, the new developer will have a maximum buildable area (before any possible FAR bonuses) of 33,110 square feet.  That’s nearly double the size of the current structure.

Aside from DOB permits indicating that a new building is on the way, details remain scant on what creature will rise from the ashes.  Stay tuned!

  • This little building, of course, is part of the National Register Lower East Side Historic District. It was built in 1887. The architect was Frederick Eberling (architect of several other buildings within the Historic District).

This kind of demolition demonstrates how little protection National Register designation affords. We need a NYC Historic District now before we suffer more such losses.
