Demolition for 128 Hester

Posted: October 21, 2009 at 6:35 am

All the drama surrounding 128 Hester Street, its questionable slumlord and subsequent evacuation, has finally come to a head.  DOB demolition permits were secured late last month, and the work has begun.  The centuries-old tenement building between Bowery and Chrystie Street is being dismantled as we speak.  Hidden behind the ominous black netting is a garbage chute which spits out the debris at street level.  Caution tape secures the immediate vicinity out front in an attempt to minimize any danger.  All this because of the Wyndham Garden Hotel under construction at 91 Bowery.

there is another building in this situation that is located in the SoHo cast iron historic district.

the building shifted 13 inches during the excavation of a building next door, the building was shored up, but it contined to shift and pull down not just it, but other buildings down with it.

still the building had not been demolished. now they are saying they will try and save the facade of the building before demolishing it.

i wonder how many buildings in chinatown get the shaft and get demolished asap while similar crappy buildings in richer parts of new york get the tony treatment?

Get used to it. As long as we keep electing a guy who never met a developer he didn't like you will see another 4 years of this. Everyone gets all excited about national "yes we can" elections but we fail to realize that all politics are local and these are the elections will effect our lives most. So sit on your hands election day and watch and then bitch more about what is coming down the road 128 will become common place. VOTE! 8 is enough and slow these wrecking balls down..
  • One building at a time the LES is going the way of the big money interests....
