The death of downtown, the dumpling festival, and Pee Phone antics, all in today’s LES neighborhood news!

Yelp reviewers give Tompkins Square Park a bad grade. “I don’t want a park with ‘character’ when what I really want is to nap outside without worrying about being pissed on, touched, robbed, etc.” [EV Grieve]

Alex laments the death of downtown.  “Sure, there was certainly a time when ‘downtown’ meant something specific here. The Village, the East Village, Soho, Chinatown, TriBeCa, Chelsea, etc. – all these neighborhoods had their own signature flavors and archetypes. But in 2009, Manhattan has arguably become fairly homogeneous from tip to tip.” [Flaming Pablum]

A dumpling festival is coming to Sara D. Roosevelt Park on Saturday, October 24.  There will be dumplings from around the world and an eating contest.  We’re there, dude [Grub St]
