Washington Square Park tombstone identified, Halloween parade history, and the mystery of the 10-room house for sale on East Third, all in today’s neighborhood news!

The New York Times expounds on the recovery of a tombstone in Washington Square Park, first reported by WSP Blog.  The faded inscription reads, “Here lies the body of James Jackson, who departed this life the 22nd day of September 1799 aged 28 years native of the county of Kildare Ireland.”  The New York Historical Society believes he was either a watchman or grocer [New York Times]

Joshua Woodward, a partner in the company that owns Table 8, has been arrested in connection to the death of an unborn baby.  Apparently, the baby was suspiciously miscarried during the thirteenth week of gestation.  Strike 87,347 for the Cooper Square Hotel [Grub St]

Vice founder Suroosh Alvi just purchased an apartment in the Flowerbox Building at 259 East Seventh Street [Observer via Curbed]

Grieve puts on a spy cap to investigate the mystery of the 10-bedroom house for sale on East Third Street.  All signs seem to point to the embattled Economakis building mansion at #47.  If proven true, it would confirm long-held beliefs that the owners were only interested in flipping the property after evicting the tenants [EV Grieve]
