New Mosque Planned for 172 Eldridge

172 Eldridge Street has been little more than a rotting, inactive dirt pit for quite some time. The vacant lot, located just north of Delancey, is owned by the Assafa Islamic Center. In a move to expand above and beyond their longtime subterranean dwelling at 172 Allen, the organization is erecting a new mosque (masjid) here. According to their official website, the structure will rise six stories and will offer a number of Islamic services to the community (prayer, marriages, funeral services, library, etc.).

But the project was recently slapped with a stop-work order, which was subsequently scaled back to a partial stop-work order. Apparently, all the site excavation caused some significant structural damage to the neighboring buildings. Indeed, the DOB show the following intel:
LACK OF SHORING HAS CAUSED VERTICAL CRACKS ON THE SIDE OF 170 ELDRIDGE ST THE ENTIRE 3 STORY LENGTH OF PROPERTY.
And..
DUE TO CONSTRUCTION AT ABOVE ADDRESS THERE IS A CRACK IN THE FRONT FACADE AND SOUTH C/O OF 174 ELDRIGDE STREET. CLR STS THAT CRACK GOES FROM 1ST FLR TO 4TH FLR OF BLDG.
These developments likely explain the relatively new steel supports, and the cement truck parked outside yesterday evening.
