Ziontalis and Eldridge Street

Not too long ago, we were flipping through the pages of some old photo albums (remember those?), and stumbled upon one of interest. A picture of Judaica shop Ziontalis at its onetime headquarters at 48 Eldridge Street, between Hester and Canal. It was shot in the fall of 1994, a few years before the company re-located to 29 West 35th Street; its current location is at 1026 Sixth Avenue. The old building, which we were told required extensive renovation at the time of the move, is now occupied by a 24-hour dual-purpose internet cafe and wireless dealer.
Here is some history of the company, courtesy of their official website:
Samuel Yaroslawitz immigrated to this country in 1920. He began manufacturing, importing and exporting Judaica from New York and Israel. His son Martin was involved in the business as a young boy and continued building on the foundation of his father. He was always committed to the enhancement of traditional values within Jewish life by creating Judaica products
Ownership is now in its third generation!
