Assafa Islamic Center Shuttered by DOB

The Assafa Islamic Center on Allen Street, which currently has a new facility under construction at 172 Eldridge Street, was shuttered last week by order of the DOB. Apparently, the FDNY proclaimed the cellar mosque an illegal house of worship with conditions that are “imminently perilous to life.” Conditions such as the single “means of egress” (exit) reported in the official vacate notice.
Meanwhile, other DIY signs indicate a new schedule of religious services while the “prayer place is closed for necessary work.”
