Look Before Crossing the Allen Street Mall

Posted on: December 7th, 2009 by

Every day, without fail, countless pedestrians cross the street (jay-walking and otherwise) with eyeballs buried in iPods, iPhones, Blackberries, and the like. Slaves to the handhelds.  Perhaps these habits were the impetus behind the recent addition of “Look” arrow-inlays in each of the intersections of the Allen Street Mall. Highly reminiscent of the sidewalks in London which warn new arrivals to look the proper direction before crossing.

LOOK!

From our perspective, though, the action seems more an affront on the intelligence level of those in the neighborhood.

LOOK the Other Way

Since I have been seeing these pop up around the bike lanes I think they are designed to alert the pedestrian to look out for the bicyclist who likely will not stop for the red light. (Of course the next biker I see using these lanes on Allen/Pike south of Canal will be the first…)

Where else have you seen the inlays pop up?
