Action for Progress Badly Damaged Due to Neighboring Construction

The full vacate order issued to 255 Easton Houston last week was no April Fools Day prank. On the contrary.  Thanks to construction on the neighboring lot at the corner of Suffolk Street, the Action for Progress day care center was badly damaged, and is now deemed “perilous to life.”  Said lot – 265 East Houston – is slated to become an eight-story building of market-rate residential living.

As Cityroom reported, contractors onsite had been digging holes for foundation supports when they noticed dangerous vibrations in the building next door.  Inspectors later discovered cracks in the facade of 255. This developer negligence resulted in numerous violations, ultimately leading to a partial stop work order.  A full rescind could occur once the proper bracing is installed.

Let’s hope this doesn’t lead to a demolition permit, and the loss of a neighborhood educational facility (and its fabulous mural!).

  • I smell a conspiracy....first robot-daycare and now this...
  • Has a temporary day-care center been set up elsewhere?

And I'm sure some developers would love to see this space become available for new housing too....
