Update: Sam Chang’s Delancey Holiday Inn

Posted on: April 19th, 2010 by

It’s been a steady eight months of inactivity at 148-154 Delancey.  Last summer, the row of old-school retail was razed to make way for Sam Chang’s new six-story Holiday Inn hotel venture. Since that time, however, the empty sandlot at the northeast corner of Suffolk Street has become little more than a receptacle for neighborhood trash (broken glass, umbrellas, containers, etc.).  But now the gears of progress are in motion again. There is life.

New building permits filed with the DOB just last Friday indicate that excavation and foundation work should begin imminently.  Ground breaking and sidewalk shed are forthcoming.

PROPOSE TO PERFORM EXCAVATION AND FOUNDATION FOR NEW HOTEL BUILDING AND INSTALL TEMPORARY CONSTRUCTION FENCE.

One of the few great things to come of the recession is the sharp decline in new construction. Greedy developers took so much history away from NYC in the 2000′s just to throw up more of their unlivable, glass box disasters.

And it will be months and months of construction hell for residents in the surrounding buildings… and there go any views they had.

My condolences to all the people in the area who will
have to look at what surly will be another third world Chang monstrosity!
