SPURA Subject of Community Board 3 Meeting
Posted: July 30, 2010 at 1:06 pm
Last night, Community Board 3 held a meeting at PS 124 on Division Street in the heart of Chinatown regarding the long-dormant SPURA site. The Seward Park Urban Renewal Area, a six acre plot of land owned by the city near the Williamsburg Bridge, was originally cleared back in November 1967, and remains the largest tract of undeveloped city-owned land south of 96th street.

Officials from the New York City Economic Development Corporation and Department of Housing Preservation and Development were on hand to present potential plans for the site and answer any questions or concerns raised by residents about the proposal. One of the main obstacles, as it’s been for decades, is the debate over who gets to live there; whether to make the new residential buildings market rate, affordable housing, low income housing, or a little of everything. The proposed development could add thousands of new families to this bustling neighborhood.

City officials will continue the dialogue with residents. Translation – many more years of inactivity.
