Say goodbye to another thin slice of Lower East Side charm. The longstanding Marcoart mural on the north-facing facade of 192 Orchard Street is no more. Vanished. The charmingly funky artwork which greeted so many in our beloved neighborhood over the years is now buried under a coat of bland brown paint. Some of the colorful characters are just barely visible, though.
The paint job is still in progress, and will most likely lead to a billboard advertisement of some sort. So much for the gateway to the Lower East Side.
1. You have no idea if this has to do with an ad coming, why would it? 2. It was only there since 2004 or 2005, don’t be dramatic. Shit belongs in a pre-school.

Loved that mural – made me smile looking down that block when everything else was boring and gray. What’s the point of painting over it? Even if an ad goes up on that wall, there’s no need to erase this – would have been better to at least hide it as a little time capsule.

agreed. losing this type of flavor is what’s hurting the neighborhood.

@Animal:
1. Why would it become an ad? Because you can see the mural directly from Houston street, one of the biggest thoroughfares of lower Manhattan. Excellent visibility, and great revenue for the building owner. Logic is why.
2. 04 or 05, who gives a shit when it was painted? If you find blank walls (or an inevitable billboard) glaring at you as you walk down the street more aesthetically appealing, maybe you should be institutionalized.
