Coming Soon: Italian Cafe at 251 East Houston

251 East Houston is a three-story tenement sandwiched between the 24-hour Remedy diner and the former Action for Progress daycare center.  Its cast-iron staircase leads down to a cozy sub-level space, where, for the last few years, the real estate lay dormant and unloved.  But all that is now in the past, as an independent cafe is currently in the works.

A DIY poster in the window announces the new tenant as an Italian cafe featuring “coffee, food, and music.” We stepped inside earlier this week to get the skinny on the new establishment. One employee informed us that the owner hails from Milan, and that she plans to offer only genuine Italian goods and traditional live music.

We were also told that they are aiming to be more Italian in flavor than the most Italian cafes around. Look for an opening sometime in mid-November.
