Nom Wah Tea Parlor Closed Temporarily for Renovations
Nom Wah Tea Parlor is amidst a sea of changes. Since mid- to late-November, the ninety-year-old neighborhood institution at 13 Doyers Street has been undergoing a complete restoration. We passed by yesterday afternoon, and caught a group of workers emptying restaurant detritus into the back of a cargo van. And the parlor was definitely closed for business.
Worried, we asked one handyman the dilly, and he informed us that Nom Wah will be back. Not to worry.

In one of the windows was a sign indicating a Facebook page for the tea spot. So we reached out to NEW owner Wilson Tang for a bit more information on all that’s happening here. Below is his response:
As you may or may not know, the restaurant is almost 100 years old. My uncle Wally Tang has been working there over 60 years and has owned it since 1974. As he starts his retirement, I took on the task of redoing the kitchen as it hasn’t had a complete overhaul since the 1950’s. In the last 10 years, the Health Dept has been especially hard on us for not being current with the times.
I will be running it going forward so it is not new ownership and more a passing on to the next generation. While we will have a brand new kitchen, not much will change in the dining area. I am keeping everything the same outside and will make it look like it did back in the 50’s except for a few upgrades with technology.
One thing seems sure, Mr. Tang is further ushering Nom Wah into current times with a snazzy website (coming soon) and a transparent Facebook presence. We’ll know more in January, when he plans to re-open!
