Soccer on a Snowy Rivington Field

With numerous man-hours invested, the Rivington Street soccer field was cleared just in time for the Sunday matches. This week was business as usual, despite all the slushy conditions in the immediate environs.
As spectator, it was quite interesting to watch players compete on a nearly invisible, and completely snowed-in field. Seriously, where is out-of-bounds?
And why is this dude shirtless?
Meanwhile, the shovel crew might need more serious snow tools after the current ice storm blows through.
Last week, reports surfaced that antisemitic incidents are surging in the days following Trump’s election a month ago. Around here, it’s usually graffiti attacks like the spray-job at Adam Yauch Park in Brooklyn. And here’s one closer to home at Essex Street. “Jew Man” is scrawled on the vestibule of Taco Recipes at number 23, […]
Stay Classy New York made such a splash upon its Rivington Street debut in October 2015 that expansion was inevitable. One year later, owner Zach Neil is exporting the kitschy Will Ferrell-themed concept (and the legend of Ron Burgundy) to Los Angeles. For a limited time only. Beginning today, and for ten days thereafter, Stay Classy […]
Hallowed Bowery grounds are now prepped for more unneeded luxury. Several months after the historically significant 138-142 Bowery were reduced to dust, the Department of Buildings finally issued permits for the expected eight-story condo-hotel. Site activity commenced about three months ago; it’s game on. The ground is already excavated and foundation work is well underway. As previously […]
Good Locksmith, the reliable mom-and-pop hardware shop located at 317 Grand Street, is reportedly moving next door. They’ve been on the Lower East Side for more than a decade. A sign inside the store alerts customers, as do the bare shelves. Update: a reader tells us, “I spoke to stephen who the grown son and […]
Three years after acquiring the two low-income buildings comprising Lands End II (265-275 Cherry Street) for $279 million, L+M Partners and the CIM Group are planning to develop the parking lots facing the water (aka 260 South Street). It’s another of the so-called “soft sites” along the Lower East Side waterfront receiving renewed attention from the industry […]
It’s that time of year again. Women in Music, a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing equality and diversity for women in the world of music, is hosting its 31st annual holiday event and fundraiser. As in years prior, there’s much to celebrate when it comes to contributions and successes of women in the music and entertainment industries. While rubbing […]
Here’s one Santa who won’t be puking all over the Lower East Side. That’s right: jolly old St. Nick is coming to the Lower East Side this weekend. It’s all part of Essex Street Market’s annual yuletide cheer, which includes making your own ornament, trimming the Market Christmas tree, and hot chocolate and candy canes for everyone, despite […]
Perfect timing. Soft Swerve has been ready to go for weeks now. The nascent ice cream shop at 85B Allen Street first announced itself back in early October, when workers promised an imminent opening. That didn’t happen right away, though, because the electricity system reportedly required an upgrade. That was what a store employee told us […]
Taqueria Diana is opening a new restaurant on Clinton Street come springtime. The “California-inspired Mexican restaurant” combined the storefronts of two departed businesses on the block – C&C Prosperity Dumpling and La Socia Pawn. The application materials just hit public record, so we now have more background on what to expect from this third outpost […]
Last Tuesday, just before the Thanksgiving break, there was an apparent gas leak at 80 Delancey Street. Con Edison quickly shut off the utility to the building. Residents are pissed, though, mainly due to the purported lack of transparency from management. The building owner of record is the Vintage Group (80 Delancey, LLC), a somewhat lesser-known landlord on […]
