New York City Deserves Domain Extension!

Posted on: April 18th, 2011 at 6:39 am by

At first sight, the well-worn bills seemed to be just another Gum Election knockoff, asking people to vote on a topic with their used chew.  Upon closer scrutiny, however, the idea is quite brilliant.  A New York City domain extension.

These latest Facebook-esque gum ballots sit amidst the glut of sheared Lady Gaga Supreme ads on the splintered plywood of 290 Mulberry Street. The NYC Domain is essentially a grassroots effort to achieve the distinct goal of being the first city in the world with its own .NYC domain extension.  Organizers need to raise $50,000 just to apply for an Internet top-level domain (TLD).  Judging by the response, some on the street support the campaign.

Hell, if porn can get its own domain (.xxx), then NYC sure as shit deserves one!  What do you think?

Ten stories of additional upper-crust glitz is on its way for the Chrystie Street midsection… Indeed, the ODA-designed condo at 165 Chrystie Street started its ascent last month, and is progressing upward quite quickly. As of now, the structure is sitting at over six stories. This sudden burst in activity follows more than a year […]

Celebrating 50 Years of ‘A.N. Headwear’ on Orchard Street

A.N. Headwear is throwing its hat into the art exhibit ring. Longtime Greek Jewish community member, Aris Negrin, has peddled hats for fifty years on upper Orchard Street. At the same address, in fact – 145 Orchard. He initially amassed his collection from hat warehouses or hat stores, being particularly drawn to pieces that people brushed […]

CB3 Votes to Co-Sponsor Controversial Rezoning of LES Waterfront in Bid to Thwart Supertall Development

Thanks to a confluence of election year politics and incessant grassroots organizing, development along the Lower East Side waterfront is firmly in the spotlight. It’s a rare moment when the voice of the people is being heard, albeit barely. There is definitely traction, but a race against the clock is afoot. Nevertheless, Community Board 3 […]

The best jukebox in Alphabet City will be muted. The HiFi Bar, the long-running rock hang on Avenue A, is closing at the end of the month. Yet another end of an era – 23 years, to be precise. Owner Mike Stuto took to Facebook last night to announce the imminent closure of the much-loved […]

After a build-out period of more than five months, including utilities-based delays, a new Vietnamese restaurant is all but ready to open on Rivington Street. Having debuted in Whitestone just last year – […]

  • NoNewTLDs

Absolutely not. It will be a waste of time, and embarrassing. It essentially creates a new playground for typosquatters to clutter up the Internet, but this time they will be doing it to New York City. It would compel every New York business to buy yet one more domain name, or risk seeing their trademark misused by someone else. There are several hundred TLDs, like .travel, .coop, .aero, .name, .museum, .tel, and one for every country in the world. How many of them are actually used by anyone but scammers and typosquatters? We should be eliminating TLDs, not adding them. This is a terrible idea.

  • Free “NYC” Domains Already Here

Brand new “NYC” Domain Names and TLDs have already been released. For the first time, Internet users can create their own set of Domains and TLDs totally free, and without any reference to ICANN (you can also get “NY” and “NEWYORK” domains too)

ISPs such as Dashworlds.com offer a parallel Internet using new Dashcom (not Dotcom) Domain Names. Dashcoms are brand new web addresses in the format “nyc-com” or “new-york” or “manhattan-ny” (Examples Only).

With users and members in over 90 countries worldwide, resolution is via an APP (although ISP links are now available to negate that need).

Things change and grow. Not-so-long ago, people would have thought a web based magazine such as this to be a waste of time, effort and money. After all why would anyone want to fork out for hugely expensive computers, sign up for extra phone lines, buy modems and routers, buy an OS, learn how to use it all….Just so they could read a magazine?….Why?….When all they had to do was walk down to the local store.

Having just one Internet in infinite cyberspace is like saying you can visit anywhere in the USA just as long as you stick to route 66. So today, just as in the USA (and everywhere else in the world) the Internet has more than one road to travel.
