Blue Stockings at 172 Allen Has Reopened

Three weeks of closed-door housecleaning (nay, sprucing-up) at Bluestockings has concluded.  Brown paper was recently removed from the windows and the retail space rearranged.  Now it’s back to the grind here at 172 Allen Street. The independent radical bookstore, on the block since 1999, reopened its doors earlier this week, just a tad later than initially projected.

When we walked past last night, employees were still rushing to put everything in order.

We’re told that Abe’s Antiques is simply masquerading as a retail setting for the upcoming ABC television series Forever. Apparently the filming crews will return to number 154 later this week to capture more scenes. For […]

The Max Fish Cigarette Makes a Comeback, But Not in the Way You Think

The iconic Max Fish marquee cigarette is most certainly making a comeback, as previously reported. But probably not in the way you think. In the Orchard Street reboot, the illuminated ornament now resides on the wall beside the entrance. With some glittery accompaniment. Placing the twenty-five-year-old piece indoors makes sense, though. Max Fish owner Ulli Rimkus […]

Lady of Grand’s Pick: 40 Years of Eileen’s Special Cheesecake [VIDEO]

Eileen’s Special Cheesecake came from “very humble beginnings.”  Eileen’s mother passed away from breast cancer at age 49 and left her the recipe for this special dessert.  She then started making the dessert alone to help her through the mourning process. The very first customer was a deli in Queens.  17 Cleveland Place was no-man’s land […]
