March 7, 1997. That was the day Lower East Side-based Staple was “accidentally” born. The design studio is the brainchild of Jeff Staple, and is quietly headquartered at 84 Orchard Street. Since then the studio ballooned to include a clothing line and eventually became the driving force behind the uber-successful Reed Space further up the street.
Not too long ago, a slick promo video produced by Eighteen Eighty was released on Vimeo, which explores the man behind the Staple empire, the neighborhood, and the “in-house incubation laboratory” that is Reed Space.
Essex Crossing is soliciting artists for a massive mural to grace one of its new residential buildings on the Lower East Side. Last week, Delancey Street Associates, the consortium of developers behind the billion-dollar project, released a Request for Proposals last week for artists interested in painting a roughly seven-story-high mural as an homage to the […]
Mayor de Blasio last Tuesday evening signed the bill into law that creates the controversial Office of Nightlife, a bureau charged with helping the city’s nightlife industry grow while managing various community concerns. “The office will be led — I’m not going to announce any names yet, there is a massive competition going in — […]
Turns out the Lucky Bee wasn’t so. The nearly-two-year-old Thai restaurant succumbed to bonkers rents and closed over the weekend. Apparently, the monthly dole was $21,000 per month for the fifty-seat space. News of its demise isn’t a complete shock, though. Proprietors Matty Bennett (the chef) and Rupert Noffs had briefly shut the business back […]
The $3.1 million reconstruction of Sol Lain Playground finally concluded earlier this month. Its deliverance is slightly ahead of schedule, and comes two months after the neighboring Henry M. Jackson Playground itself debuted. New infrastructure installed in this public space includes updated play equipment, spray shower feature, basketball court, multi-purpose play area, benches, fences, drainage, water […]
No sooner did 101 Stanton Street change hands than this enormous, eye-grabbing leasing banner appear above the corner store. It seems rather apparent that the new owners now want the Prema Hair salon gone from the ground-floor retail. You’ll recall that a small consortium of real estate firms – Penn South Capital, Conway Capital, and […]
The 6th Annual LUNGS Harvest Arts Festival is happening this weekend, and promises plenty of local entertainment and creative craftsmanship throughout more than 50 community gardens spread across Lower Manhattan. Just a few of the many highlights partaking in this year’s festival include fairy tale puppetry by the Czechoslovak-American Marionette Theatre, a thought provoking look […]
With Factory Tamal now up and running on Ludlow Street, its former location is back in the hands of its maker, so to speak. Cafe Grumpy just reclaimed the other half of its Essex Street coffee shop. We are told that the south store of 13 Essex Street – formerly the cafe’s on-premise bakery – […]
The doctor is now seeing patients. Customers, rather. Dr Smood, the health eatery that offers “smart food for a good mood,” opened the doors to its Lower East Side location this week. As you might expect, the new “organic boutique cafe” at the corner of Orchard and East Houston Streets carries with it an antiseptic […]
A row of historically significant Grand Street buildings is one step closer to demolition. Applications were filed with the city last week to erect the seven-story residential structure at 282-286 Grand Street. We first broke news of this development back in April. The property owner – former oncologist-cum-art dealer Marc Straus – has major plans […]
In our current food-obsessed culture – especially in places like New York City – it seems that we are global food citizens. We have easy access to an endless variety of restaurants and specialty food stores, which enable us to explore foods from all over the world. And we can easily watch a multitude of […]
