2-Alarm Fire at 39 Eldridge Street [Updated]

Posted on: February 16th, 2012 by

A two-alarm fire broke out at 39 Eldridge Street shortly before 4 am this morning. The top floor of the five-story building is still smoldering, but firefighters are battling through. There are searchlights on the rooftop and the ornate cornice is visibly blackened. Shattered glass and the musty smell of smoke envelop the block at the moment. Now a half-hour later, it appears the flames are under control.

No word yet on the cause of the fire or if there are any injuries as a result. If you have more info or photos, drop a line. More as the story develops…

My neighbor Gelo mentioned to me that this building used to host a marijuana plantation back in the days. To bad it doesn’t anymore. Now the whole neighborhood smells like burned skulks and tires instead of getting every one high on that fire. ; )

So sad, about 100 hundred children go to that preschool. It doesn’t look like they’ll be able to reopen soon. I wonder if there is structural damage?
