Quidditch in Sara D. Roosevelt Park

Posted on: February 20th, 2012 by

Call us old-fashioned, but Harry Potter enthusiasts playing Quidditch in the park is weird as hell.  On a busy Saturday morning, college-aged students hopped around PACE field in Sara D. Roosevelt Park with broomsticks between their legs, throwing volleyballs through hula hoops. The area teemed with onlookers, many of which gawked and cringed.

But because this is melting pot of the Lower East Side, the soundtrack to the event was not the epic John Williams score, but that of the drone of traditional Chinese tunes.

That is probably NYU’s official Quidditch team in the photos. Quidditch is fun and a bit goofy, but its not a joke. Over 400 community and college Quidditch teams are registered with the International Quidditch Association.  Last year the Quidditch World Cup was held in NYC itself on Randall’s Island, 95 teams competed and over 10,000 ticketed spectators came to watch the games.

Another NYC local team is the NY Badassilisks who are community based team (meaning you don’t have to belong to a school to be a member of a team.)
