Newfangled Allen Street Mall Adds Furniture
DOT and the Parks Department are definitely taking their sweet time with the Allen/Pike Street Mall. In typical bureaucratic fashion, the three-years-in-the-making capital works project continues to sputter along toward the finish line.
A few months ago, just when we thought construction was winding down, the prototype just south of Delancey was ripped apart. The entire Allen Street corridor is pretty much in shambles with no concrete indication of a finish line. But there are nevertheless small signs of infrastructural progress – pathways are paved, modern chrome street lamps in place, medians rebuilt, and some literal street furniture of the maize-and-blue variety (tables and chairs). Also note the widened median and recently-installed water fountain at the intersection of Delancey.
Meantime, the section of Pike Street slated for this same change is receiving much less attention. Stalled as its big brother Allen basks in the newfound attention. Soon, people…
