The Street Soccer USA Cup in Sara D. Roosevelt Park

For the second time in a month, soccer is again an agenda item inside Sara D. Roosevelt Park. Two half-court fields were constructed early yesterday morning inside the Broome Street sunken court (“the pit”), with the official opening ceremonies having transpired later in the afternoon. The bustling and whistle blowing is all part of a charity event called Street Soccer USA, and it’ll continue again today on the Lower East Side.

Street Soccer USA is a 20-city footie league that aims to “get homeless men, women, and youth off the streets, ‘scoring goals on the field, and achieving their goals in life.’” Programs in different cities train three times a week and compete locally within the community; they also participate in the annual Street Soccer USA Cup which is what’s happening now.

The finals will be in held Times Square on Sunday, 12pm – 4 pm.
