Wrecking Ball Smashes Through 185-191 Bowery

And now for another demolition update over at 185-191 Bowery. The dust is kicked up on the regular down at the southeast corner of Delancey Street, where the wrecking ball is presently making quick work of the four-parcel swath. Since our last checkup a few weeks ago, this once-proud row of housing is now a fraction of its former self. What a shame.

After the inevitable, the soon-to-be lot will likely remain vacant for an extended period before any ground breaking. Remember that a new CitizenM hotel is on its way to this location, and will no doubt burden the already-tired infrastructure here. Not to mention clog an already busy thoroughfare.

Any idea how high this is anticipated to be? There is a very narrow park that serves a very underserved neighborhood behind this- LES/Chinatown has substantially less park space per person than the rest of NYC. If this building puts the community garden in shadow it would drastically affect what could be planted there. Shadowing also reduces all park usage during colder months when sunlight (as opposed to daylight) cannot reach park benches.
Aside from the absurdity of overbuilding and all it’s burdens.

How sad. And so goes the Bowery.

Your comment – “Not to mention clog an already busy thoroughfare.” compelled me to say something on this. Every weekend, I take the M103 to/from City Hall. Because of the clog on the corner of Delancey/Kenmare and Bowery, the bus arrival times are all messed up. Cars are constantly blocking the box, causing the buses to arrive 3 at a time. I personally witnessed this yesterday as I was waiting for the southbound bus on Bowery/Kenmare. The bus was across the street and it took ten minutes to arrive at the stop because of the stupid cars blocking the box. I can’t imagine when this hotel is up how worse it’ll be. As usual, there were no traffic cops in sight. Is this a case for Greg Mocker at WPIX?

at the intersection of delancey/kenmare and the bowery there is no ‘box’ to block!!
I tried to have that intersection painted with a grid over 6 years ago. took me well over a year – contacted electeds, went to committees at cb2 & cb3 for support. received that support, but the DOT denied the request. why? because the roadway narrows on kenmare st. was the explanation!! since then there have been ‘right & left turn only’ lanes painted on the westbound delancey roadway. perhaps?????
please continue the fight for this, I’m kind of worn out!
