Chinatown Duane Reade on Bowery Shutters

Posted on: September 12th, 2012 by

As of today, the Lower East Side scoreboard reads as follows: Bowery – 1, Duane Reade – 0

Mom-and-pop assassin Duane Reade shuttered its lone outpost along the Bowery in recent weeks. Illuminated lettering was pried from the facade of 50 Bowery, while the windows received the brown paper treatment. Let the property cleanse begin. In the meantime, those who had prescriptions at this location are urged to head over to 111 Worth Street.

It’s definitely a rare sight to see Duane Reade edged out of a neighborhood. Despite the perceived victory, we still get the feeling that the drug store chain will return to the Bowery in the near future.

I always got my painkillers there, I feel like my drug dealer just died.

Hopefully it won’t become another bank. There’s 1 of nearly every bank chain already on that block.

Isn’t that site set to be demo’d and a new 27-story mixed use building by architect Peter Poon planned to rise there?
