DOT Installs New Bike Parking Corral Outside Bluestockings on Allen

Slideshow renderings officially became a reality this week as the DOT unveiled the newest neighborhood CityRacks corral. Situated directly outside Bluestockings at 172 Allen Street, this designated parking area follows shortly after installation of the Mud Coffee infrastructure on East Ninth. And in quick time, too. From unanimous Community Board 3 approval to actual implementation was a slim three months.

As previously reported, one 22-foot curbside parking space was eliminated to establish an area for four circular mounts, while simultaneously eliminating sidewalk congestion. That’s the goal, anyway. Flexible bollards and a traffic sign warn drivers of the traffic change, but the flower pots (300 lbs when full) are still nowhere in sight.

Bluestockings is the maintenance partner for this CityRacks location, meaning it’s responsible for keeping the area clean, planting flowers, and shoveling snow in the winter.

Next up for the CityRacks treatment – Cafe Habana on Prince Street.

Very nice, but it still doesn’t prevent thieves from stealing your bike.
