Kenny Scharf Paints New Mural on Norfolk Street

Posted on: October 4th, 2012 by

Kenny Scharf hasn’t been seen around the Lower East Side in quite awhile (although, he was on the Simpsons). We last spotted him during his joint Gates Project with Anonymous Gallery. Those murals remain largely intact over a year after being painted. And now the hiatus is seemingly over.

Indeed, Scharf turned up last week to throw some colorful cartoons onto the Norfolk Street exit of Beauty & Essex. This concrete canvas previously donned the blue-tinted mural work of street artist Hush.

Curious – anyone actually prefer this goofy cartoony thing to what was there before? Who in their right mind thinks this is an upgrade?? I never really got Scharf. Seems like an immature, stoner attempt to channel Keith Haring. I understand why someone would want to take his trapper keeper doodles to the street, but how did he manage to convince everyone else there’s something more to it than that?
