In the fall of 2011, Childish Gambino (aka Donald Glover) released his fourth studio effort entitled Camp. Track 8 is a catchy, string-filled rap called “L.E.S.” There are some vague shout-outs to the neighborhood, like the girl cryin’ on Ludlow or meeting friends at Pianos. Nothing over the top.

Well, team Glover/Gambino finally got around to filming a video for the song, and it’s pretty cool. Photographer Ibra Ake spent “several nights” filming bits for this ode to the Lower East Side, dropping it just a few days ago. The well-produced short certainly captures the essence of diversity after dark around the neighborhood, and is fairly addictive. Lots of eye candy – skaters, high-heelers, short skirts, bros, iPhone zombies, lesbian necking, steamy backseat coitus, and plenty of storefront cameos.

Street Artist Marty Mar’s Subtle Anti-Gentrification Mural on Essex Street

It was a hyperlocal controversy the day street artist Garrett Wasserman decorated the wall outside Clayton Patterson’s residence on Essex Street. Perhaps confusion is what resulted in the erasure of Marty Mar’s mural; apparently Wasserman had been tapped to paint a different section of the masonry. Nevertheless, “Lower East Side Story” resulted and almost immediately […]
