Mars Bar Corner to Become TD Bank Branch

Fuckin’ hell. This shouldn’t come as any surprise to Lower East Siders, but the newly-built corner which heretofore hosted Mars Bar is to become a 4,300 square-foot bank. Another branch of TD, to be exact. The New York Post confirmed as much in a tidbit yesterday, noting the institution just signed the lease for an undisclosed amount. It’s no less maddening, and further salt in a two-year-old wound that hasn’t completely healed.

Despite seemingly hollow promises to the contrary, a Mars Bar return to East First Street seems rather unlikely. Jupiter 21 is now in orbit beside equally craptastic living quarters like the twin Avalons. The mixed-use condo/rental development should open sometime in the spring.

As previously reported, Trainwreck was written by foul-mouthed comedienne Amy […]

Green Gate Cleaner Offers ‘Organic’ Dry Cleaning for Upper Orchard Street

Barely a month after Synchronicity departed 179 Orchard Street, its replacement has arrived. The anointed newcomer is an upscale, “organic” laundry/dry cleaner called Green Gate Cleaner. Opening transpired last week. Neons are aglow. The storefront – no stranger to vacancy the last few years - is pretty much a white box space with a countertop. A […]

Army & Navy Bags Adds New Canopy on East Houston Store

Eleven months ago, the Lower East Side nearly lost one of its treasures. Army & Navy Bags at East Houston almost met its doom last August after the landlord nearly tripled the rent. Luckily, cooler heads prevailed, and the forty-year-old business was able to negotiate a relatively favorable price of “just under double” the previous amount. […]

100 Montaditos is Still Happening at the Former EarthMatters Store on Ludlow Street

100 Montaditos is still happening in Hell Square, but taking its sweet ass time. For the first time since June 2013, the entrance of 177 Ludlow Street is again covered by a plywood shed. The new lumber arrived last month with some new teaser signage. We also sniped a glimpse of the interior. It was […]
