Mars Bar Corner to Become TD Bank Branch

Fuckin’ hell. This shouldn’t come as any surprise to Lower East Siders, but the newly-built corner which heretofore hosted Mars Bar is to become a 4,300 square-foot bank. Another branch of TD, to be exact. The New York Post confirmed as much in a tidbit yesterday, noting the institution just signed the lease for an undisclosed amount. It’s no less maddening, and further salt in a two-year-old wound that hasn’t completely healed.

Despite seemingly hollow promises to the contrary, a Mars Bar return to East First Street seems rather unlikely. Jupiter 21 is now in orbit beside equally craptastic living quarters like the twin Avalons. The mixed-use condo/rental development should open sometime in the spring.

‘SHNY’ on Suffolk Street Morphs Into New Cafe Called ‘Mr. Rapidan’

Some five months into its tenure at 116 Suffolk Street, Spreadhouse is changing its tune. Or should we say, taste. The short-lived SHNY “creative space” is no more, instead having morphed into a new cafe concept called “Mr. Rapidan.” The changeover was swift, happening just last week. Apparently Mr. Rapidan is pulling double duty, acting as […]

Michael Shah’s Controversial Liquor License for Rochelle’s Renewed Without Community Input

The liquor license of Leave Rochelle Out of It is set to expire after today. Or so we thought. The license was mysteriously renewed without first appearing before Community Board 3 for input. As such, our research shows that Matt Levine remains listed as co-licensor for a business in which he has no ownership. Indeed, […]
