With a title like “Gritty Late 1980s New York Lower East Side,” the following clip was absolutely impossible to ignore. Shot from the POV of a moving car, the three-minute video provides a great snapshot of the streetscapes in that era, beginning with a left-turn from East Houston north onto Avenue D.

The footage was plucked from the Kinolibrary archives, an independent agency that represents “remarkable and rare archive footage from around the world.”

Artist Rad Roubeni Hosting a Month-Long Gallery Show Inside Former Chase Bank on Delancey

So it looks like the old Chase bank branch at 104 Delancey Street has morphed into a pseudo gallery space, albeit a temporary one. At least until the landlord can find a suitable tenant willing to foot the bill. We saw workers cleaning up the other night for a similar event. After two years of […]

An eight-minute video surfaced online this week showing three teens being arrested by a gaggle of 7th Precinct officers on East Broadway. The boys are seen getting cuffed while pressed up against parked cars outside Seward Park. Iglesia Cristiana Primitiva church is visible in the background. What’s rather disturbing is the plainclothes cop who, for […]

100 Montaditos on Ludlow Street is Officially Kaput

For 100 Montaditos, it’s one culture, zero ways to do it. At least on on the battered upper section of Ludlow Street. When it came to the Lower East Side iteration, the Spanish-based fast casual chain was an epic fail and a perfect example of how evading the host community can hurt in the long run. […]

Developer Sues City for $50M Over Pathmark Pharmacy Site on Cherry Street

We’re drowning in riverside drama. While Extell Development Company clanks away at its monstrous two-tower development at 250 South Street, the adjacent property on the eastern flank is going through its own growing pains. The current lessee of the city-owned parcels comprising 235-247 Cherry Street – formerly the Pathmark Pharmacy – is now suing the Housing […]
