About Those Cyclists Towing Flatbeds of Citi Bikes Around the City
Perhaps you’ve witnessed this. In recent weeks, we’ve seen the proliferation of vest-wearing cyclists towing flatbeds of Citi Bikes. These bike trailers are everywhere, from the Lower East Side to midtown. And it’s always an eye-grabber; a WTF moment.
According to Citi Bike brass, these new pedalers are actually part of the “rebalancing team,” whose sole function is to “replenish bikes at stations that are empty and remove bikes from stations that are full.” Apparently they prefer the manual transference because bikers are more efficient at navigating traffic than those boxy vans.
We’ve found that the bike trailers are much more effective at getting through rush hour traffic and are easier to maneuver than box trucks when only travelling a short distance. Some of these team members are employees and others are contracted from a service.
