One Year After its Debut, ‘Bar Belly’ on Orchard Street Closes for a Revamp

It’s not quite working out for Bar Belly on Orchard Street, the so-called “little sis of The Fat Radish.” Or so it seems…

A month after a subtle exterior makeover that included a sidewalk beach hut, the five-year-old establishment is again under the knife. The bar is silent and token butcher paper obstructs the gut job. It’s the second time within a year that ownership chose to revamp the business. Last summer, an identity shift resulted in a change from Leadbelly to Bar Belly.

News of this most recent closure is announced with pithy window scrawl – “working on our beach bod; having a facelift.” It’s unclear at the moment when Bar Belly will return or if a new name follows, as their social media presence is visibly mum.

And the history lesson. The team behind the Fat Radish across the street aggressively installed The Leadbelly at 14 Orchard Street five years ago. Their endeavor came at the expense of Sweet Paradise, whose bartender, Leah Dixon, would later open Beverly’s on Essex Street.
