Here are Some Choice Media Quotes from the Penis Mural Story

When Swedish artist painted the four-story phallus on the eastern exposure of 303 Broome Street, it became an immediate flashpoint. Complaints about the purple-pink penis reached a head on Wednesday afternoon – three days after the mural was painted – prompting landlord Samy Mahfar to order its erasure.

Mahfar was allegedly unaware of the mural ahead of time, though his company has dealt with curator, The New Allen, in the past.

Despite the indecency backlash, though, it sparked quite the conversation. And media frenzy, with outlets springing at the opportunity to craft pithy headlines. Most came up short, though. Here’s a brief roundup of the puns and innuendo that popped up in headlines across the globe…

  • “She says she got the shaft.” (Massive Penis Artis Says She Got Screwed – New York Post)
  • “New York City’s latest piece of monumental street art is facing some stiff opposition.” (Giant Mural of Phallus on Lower East Side Pricks Locals – Hyperallergic)
  • Painted ‘Private’ Removed from Lower East Side Building – NY1
  • “Swedish street artist Carolina Falkholt stood up and took credit on Instagram for the veiny behemoth — which lacks testicles but no doubt took cajones to paint — and said it’s really getting a rise out of folks.” (Enormous Penis Pops up in NYC – New York Post)
  • “The massive mural of a turgid male member that sprung up on the side of 303 Broome Street on Christmas Eve is being covered over by painters.” (Lower East Side’s Giant Penis Mural Didn’t Last Long – New York Post)

And some Twitter fun…
