Coming Soon: JILLANNE at 162 Allen Street

For many years, Rico-Perez Products held down a small storefront outpost at 162 Allen Street, serving natural vitamins and supplements to a primarily Hispanic clientele.  But the operation didn’t last into the current decade.  Since the closure of this location (there are nine others across the tri-state area), the space has been a void, with the old awning still in place as reminder.  Now, a new tenant is poised to open here very soon. Open Job Call at American Apparel, Part Deux

If the last American Apparel job call is any indication, then the corner of East Houston and Orchard Street will be packed next Wednesday.  The Lower East Side outpost, which recently removed five of its storied benches, is holding so-called hipster tryouts to fill “key holder positions” for both day and night shifts. Bonus points for extra cleavage, plaid, ironic mustaches, and/or straw fedoras.

Souvlaki GR Truck Hits the Streets

Earlier this week, Midtown Lunch reported on a new food truck that recently hit the streets of Manhattan, the Souvlaki GR.  The aptly-named venture serves up Greek-style truck treats, including souvlaki, bifteki sandwiches, and fries. Yesterday evening, it was parked at the southeast corner of West Houston and Thompson Street.

No More Rita’s Leather Fair at 143 Orchard

It’s really no secret that the leather vendors on Orchard Street are hanging on for dear life.  Their demise is gradual, but seemingly inevitable in the face of the gold rush.  Sunday pedestrian malls don’t attract so much foot traffic anymore, and many of the old-school storefronts are quietly shuttering.  One-by-one. And now another. Rita’s Leather Fair at 143 Orchard Street has been vacant for months.
