The new Barry McGee mural wasn’t even alive for fifteen hours before being modified last night. Guess the owners of 294 Bowery weren’t too happy with his coloring outside the lines, as it were.

Saturday afternoon, a group of young skaters took a break from grinding the recently “mall-terated” Allen Street Mall to check out the neighborhood wildlife.  The boys happened upon a baby rat running in the bike lane, mere feet from northbound traffic.  Boards dropped, and out came the cell phones and cameras. Barry McGee, aka TWIST, and his posse were busy last night at the graffiti wall. Animal reports that the artists were tagging the fresh canvas from midnight until 3 am.  Here is the scene as of 9 am this morning. Be sure to check out EV Grieve’s latest coverage here.

Chico’s John Lennon Mural Erased

This wound cuts pretty deep. In the wake of Mark David Chapman’s recent parole hearing postponement, coincidentally, Chico’s John Lennon mural at 9 Avenue B has vanished.  Definitely one of the best pieces in his vast body of work. Instead, we are now left with drab brown paint.

Allen Street Mall-terations Two Weeks from Completion

That massive “mall-teration” undertaking on the Allen Street Mall is hastily drawing to a close.  Over the weekend, volunteer artists working on scene informed us that the sidewalk masterpiece should be completed sometime in the next couple weeks, contrary to what we thought earlier.

Open Job Call at American Apparel, Part Deux

If the last American Apparel job call is any indication, then the corner of East Houston and Orchard Street will be packed next Wednesday.  The Lower East Side outpost, which recently removed five of its storied benches, is holding so-called hipster tryouts to fill “key holder positions” for both day and night shifts.
