In response to our post regarding the new nightlife establishment at 168 Elizabeth Street, owner Matthew Maddy emailed us his side of the story.  Apparently the sub-level digs won’t be a beer garden as posited by flyers along the Bowery.

Lynne Truss, author of Eats, Shoots, and Leaves, would be extremely happy with the grammar vigilante who marked up this flyer at the southeast corner of East Houston and Mulberry Street.  It’s all well and good, order has been restored to the universe.

Apology Line Subject of New Documentary

In the early eighties, a unique underground community developed around the then-revolutionary technology of answering machines.  The concept was dubbed the Apology Line, and was the brainchild of artist Alan Bridge.  His social experiment in anonymous confessions lasted until his untimely death in 1995, and is now the subject of a new independent documentary.

T-Poutine is desperately seeking a beer and wine license from the State Liquor Authority.  At last month’s Community Board 3 meeting, their request was denied on the grounds of noise complaints and lack of support (and signatures) from neighbors. There’s a big promotional push happening in the neighborhood right now for travel to Miami. Taped to light poles along the Houston corridor, from east to west, are dozens of advertisements with the tagline “express yourself.”  As if people here really needed to be told to visit Florida.
