CommentsThere’s a new glass-box addition to the seedy northeast corner of Bowery and Delancey. With the Bowery Ballroom and JMZ subway entrance mere steps away, the powers that be considered this a high traffic spot for a shiny Cemusa Newsstand. Just what the already-narrow sidewalk needs.

Instead of the traditional green with requisite graffiti, the whole facade is now painted brown. CommentsOver six months ago, Jeremiah wrote a sprawling piece about the proverbial end of the classic city newsstand. In that time, many such outposts have been replaced by soulless glass boxes, each a product of Spanish-owned Cemusa. Precisely the same company that can’t spell Delancey or refers to the Bowery as a street.

CommentsPlastered across a vacant newsstand on Thompson Street, just south of West 3rd, is a sign with a desperate message, “Save Our Newsstand, Save Our Community.” The storefront has been shuttered for quite some time.
Appropriate signage considering the imminent extinction of newsstands citywide.
