Gallery Be Gone

Evidence of the art gallery that once graced 139 Orchard is gradually being erased from the block. After its closing last year, the space was in a state of dormancy. Then one day, out of nowhere, the netting was visible and the demolition was audible. However, it will be quite some time before anything is built, as the site was recently slapped with a stop-work order [link]. Until then, we the community are stuck with yet another construction zone. Amble past and you can still smell the raw history.

Much like in Soho, trendy art displays are quickly replacing their more bohemian/underground nemeses.

There was an eight-month court battle between the gallery owners and DAB-Group, before the holdouts were finally evicted [link]. Their self-proclaimed grand closing occurred April 6, 2007 [link].
