Allen Street Hotel Rapidly Rising

A month since our last checkup, and the Allen Street hotel has already more than doubled its height at 139 Orchard (aka 138 Allen).  This rapid progress on the Edward Mills & Associates-designed tower is something not seen in the neighborhood since before the Great Recession hit home.  Each day cranes and other heavy machinery line up on Allen Street for the daily grind, while the construction workers pound away at the superstructure up above.

Meanwhile, on the Orchard Street front, there’s a depressing sense of impending doom wafting through the air.  It’s quite possible that once the swank 16-story, 80-room hotel debuts, the old guard of leather and discount vendors will topple like dominoes.  So, by the time visitors flock to dwell in yet another Lower East Side hotel, the Orchard Street featured in their tour guides might not even exist.
