Eldridge Street Synagogue in Boardwalk Empire
A recent email blast from the Eldridge Street Synagogue confirms that the neighborhood landmark was in fact featured in Episode 10 of the HBO series Boardwalk Empire. The scene in question actually transpires in Chicago with the Al Capone crew, which initially threw us off the scent. It was obviously filmed before the installation of the gorgeous new stained-glass window.

The setting is the bar mitzvah of a Chicago gangster associate’s son. While sitting in the pews, Capone converses with a synagogue elder about the religious custom, and how it’s about the transition from boy to man. As a result, he allegedly has a profound enlightenment of his own to finally grow up.
