Olek Exhibit Revived at Christopher Henry Gallery

Olek overwhelmingly won the hearts and minds of the Lower East Side last year with her unique crochet covers. 2010 began with a window installation at ABC No Rio and a curiously-placed yarn bike just outside the Rivington venue. The bike then followed the Polish-born street artist to Essex Street in July, a marketing move meant to publicize her exhibit at Cuchifritos.  And to cap it all off, the year ended with a most ambitious project of outfitting the Wall Street Bull in a colorful new sweater. But that piece was removed by the “bull keeper” within two hours.

Subsequent attention from earlier projects and the Cuchifritos gig led to a showcase at the Christopher Henry Gallery at 127 Elizabeth Street in the fall.  “Knitting is for Pus****” became so popular, that the show was extended through November.  And now, due to overwhelming public demand, it’s set to return yet again.

We spoke with Olek earlier this week and learned that the exhibit jumpstarts today (January 5). In the run-up to the revival, the artist told us that a substantial portion of her trademark panels from the gallery were used on the bull and consequently destroyed.  So last week was apparently spent crocheting at a clip with “tired hands.”
