Update: Sweet Grapes Wine Bar at 39 Essex

Sweet Grapes Wine Bar has been floating in limbo for nearly six months already, promising locals that it was “coming soon.”  The last noticeable movement here was over the summer, when the dangling plastic greenery was added to the storefront awning and a hype sign placed in the door window. Otherwise, things are pretty quiet at 39 Essex Street.

Time Out’s Feed blog had a sneak peek of the joint in early December, and published a review on December 3.  Bar-goers will reportedly have the option of beer, wine, and simple finger foods – cheese, hummus or charcuterie platters. Or for those seeking a more robust meal, sandwiches and salads will be imported from sister eatery Flowers Cafe up the street.

Intel at the time of publication indicated that Sweet Grapes would open by mid-December. Well, here we are, a month later.  We put in a call to Flowers Cafe at 355 Grand Street, whose ownership is also behind the new wine spot. Apparently everything is ready to go, as it was in August, but the crew is still waiting on licensing paperwork.  State documents at the SLA show the official status as pending. Nevertheless, ownership plans to launch sometime within the next week or so.
