Chinatown Parade for Year of the Rabbit [Video]

Yesterday wasn’t only about football.  It was also the 12th annual Chinatown Lunar New Year Parade. As in the past, festivities for the new year began at the crowded intersection of Mott and Hester Streets. An area where Little Italy meets Chinatown. Confetti poppers, snaps, and balloons were the order of the day. And similar to the last two years, the weather was quite warm for February. Plenty of sidewalk runoff from the melting snow.

However, the route was slightly modified for the Year of the Rabbit. This time around, Allen Street was not employed for celebration.  Instead, the endless stream of floats and dragons marched the following route: Mott through Chatham to East Broadway; north on Eldridge to Hester; then over to Forsyth; and terminating at Grand Street.

Thousands of spectators flooded all points of the route.  There were plenty of cops on hand to police the scene, but some were busy shooting photos with their iPhones.

But we wanted a prime view of the action, so we scored a money-shot perch on the Manhattan Bridge overlooking East Broadway.  This was a spectacle in itself, as a dozen or so photographers had already claimed the area.  It was like a makeshift press box with more camera gear than you can imagine.

Senator Chuck Schumer also marched, waving and shaking hands with constituents.
